- This is our Dog Friendly Circular Walk around Usk Reservoir Page. For more Dog Walks in the Castle's Gardens & Craig y Nos Country Park see our Local Dog Walks, Reservoirs & Beaches Index, or scroll to the bottom of this page.
A mostly level walk all around reservoir. We go around anti-clockwise.
Park up beside Dam. Walk across the dam to join the footpath around the Reservoir. Or drive past the dam, around and under it, to park in the reservoir fishing boats area.
Always do this walk anti-clockwise; there are fewer choices of path to confuse you. You and your owner can more logically follow your route around.
There are two streams to cross, both with fully repaired footbridges.
Two slight inclines after the first bridge but mostly this walk does not climb too much above water level.
Very pleasant with excellent views looking east to the mountain tops. You can see the mountains north of the castle from here.
Follow your nose around this reservoir and pay attention to the direction you are facing.
It is possible to get slightly lost as there is a track which goes promisingly off to the left a mile or two after the second of the two footbridges - this is about 3/4 of the way into the walk - which you may branch down in anticipation of circling around the reservoir, only to find you dead-end at the water's edge. At this point you need to be following a path which runs parallel to lanes.
The correct route takes you slightly away from the Reservoir after the first bridge. You are then within a few hundred metres of the road you drove along after the second footbridge, so can't go too wrong.
If you turn off right too soon you'll hit a road which you think is the road you came along to the reservoir, but is in fact the 'main' road!
If you find yourself on this, turn left, walk along for a mile, and take lane first left turn to the Reservoir (signposted 'Usk Reservoir').
This is the lane which you will have turned right on to, on your outward drive, to get to the reservoir.
Common sense will get your owner back to the car making this a nice circular dog walk.
This definitely is one of the more pleasant and easy dog walks locally.
It takes Martin, Jack and Sheeba 2 hours and ten minutes ambling along with pram or Segway, including stops.
There are plenty of spots where us dogs can run down to the water's edge and have a quick dip (not that we should - it's a reservoir after all)!
Also a nice picnic spot at the first footbridge - I'll tell my owner to bring some lunch and flasks!
