Wet winter may contribute to further spread of potentially fatal dog disease
The number of reported cases of lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is on the increase across the UK and a very wet winter could be putting even more dogs at risk

Pet owners are being urged to be on the lookout for signs their dog could have picked up the deadly lungworm parasite, with evidence to suggest it is spreading across the UK.

Lungworm is a parasite that infects dogs, causing symptoms such as breathing problems, bleeding around the gums, eyes and nose, vomiting, diarrhoea and potentially even death.

Research from the Royal Veterinary College has shown the parasite has spread across the country, while the wet winter could be a major contributor as wet conditions are ideal for slugs and snails.

Research shows that while most dog owners are aware of the deadly parasite, the vast majority do not treat their pet against it.

To raise awareness of the campaign and encourage dog owners to ‘Act On Lungworm’, pharmaceutical company Bayer Plc. is launching its biggest ever lungworm campaign which will also feature a 24-hour radio station called ‘Hound Waves’ specifically designed for dogs and their owners.

The campaign aims to educate dog owners on the threat posed by lungworm and encourage them to protect their pets with preventative treatment as well as informing them of the signs and symptoms to look out for with the advice to speak to their vet should they have any concerns.
